Dining Room Table Decorating Ideas For Fall

Easy Summer to Fall Dining Room Refresh

Welcome to the cottage and my first Fall decorating post of the season. I want you to know today is all about YOU! I decorated my first Fall space expressly with you in mind. I wanted to share the same spot you just saw decorated for late Summer, and dripping in Lemons… now ready to welcome Fall,  with this easy, Summer to Fall dining room refresh! I want to show you how simple it can be to have a seasonal change, with little change. In fact, my goal was to switch out as little as possible, yet still convey the coming of Fall. I'm happy with the transition and I hope you like it too!

Come take a peek and tell me what you think…

Initially, I removed all the Lemony goodness from the table, and I started to pull it all apart like I always do, but something stopped me.

I suddenly had this thought, that fully redecorating the farm table and dining room area with a whole new look, might actually be doing a disservice to a lot of you.

Because everyone might not be able to start from scratch with different everything just for a seasonal change. I've been blogging for almost 6 years, and in that time I've accumulated a lot of things to decorate with. And I already had a pretty good collection going. But that possibly isn't the norm for all and I want to consider that.

What I'm trying to say is, I want the majority of you to feel like "hey, I could do that!" after you leave the blog. I want what I share to feel realistic and attainable. I love the really super-styled, glossy, gorgeous homes that look like magazine shoots as much as the next girl… but I don't think many of us live in that world. I know I don't. And I want to celebrate us and the world we live in!

So this is a 'regular girl', use what you have, little refresh farm table re-do for Fall.

Simple Decorating Ideas to Transition from Summer to Fall - cottage farmhouse farm table dining room

  • I started with the same pedestal centerpiece. I changed out the wreath and exchanged the glass candle for one wrapped in Birch. Done.

  • I kept all the existing placemats, napkins, dinner plates & glassware in place.

  • I removed the aqua salad/dessert plates and yellow bowls, and replaced them with the matching bowls that came with the dinner plates that were already in place. Done.

  • I added a single white pumpkin to each place setting, that instantly conveys the season at hand. Done.

  • As hard as I tried not to… I did add a crock with a white candle to each end of the table. Whoops.

  • I kept the serving area the same, making the fewest adjustments. Just replacing the Summery items that were deleted. A velvet pumpkin, acorns, a Autumn candle and some dried roses in a thrift store brass vessel.

Did you spot it? It begged to come home with me… and what can I say? I mean, it's a pillow. What kind of monster do you think I am? Of course I gave it a new, loving home.

  • And funnily enough… for the rattan chairs, a pillow switch was all that was needed. I happened to have some on hand. Go figure? haha. Done.

I didn't go full-on Fall. Instead I used a soft neutral. There is still plenty of time to bring out the rich, vibrant colors of Autumn. I simply wanted to give a nod to the new season that is upon us.

  • For the bar cart, I traded the Hydrangea for a hat box and added the bundled wheat on the top shelf, paired with my Bee glasses. A tiny punkin' found it's way into the Eucalyptus wreath as well. Done.

  • The little shuttered hutch under the window got a basket, crock and dried Eucalyptus leaves from the previous centerpiece.

I just love these little French stripe pillows. It's like, they were made for the rattan chairs I got from HomeGoods. I'm still smitten with them, and feel so lucky I stumbled on them, on one of my rare visits to the store!!

The tiny white pumpkins were found in the floral isle. They come with thin reeds to be used in arrangements, but I pull the sticks out and use them as accents & vase filler. I've got them in orange too. They are great decorating items!

  • For the mantel. I kept the same DIY pallet wood backdrop, two candle sticks, used replacement candles (in lieu of the Lemon ones), and added a galvanized tray, dried leaves, and an Owl. Done.

The beautiful hand-painted wood gather sign is from Lollyletters [shop here]. They have many different styles and fonts and sayings… all beautiful! The tray came in a set of two from Decor Steals and the leaves were saved from a floral arrangement. I thought they dried perfect! The Owl is from Ross. I think he needs a better gold paint job. Something more… antique brassy gold and a little deeper.

And as easy as that… I went from bright, yellow, Lemony Summer, to a light, neutral Fall look. It was an easy, almost effortless transition. I used lots of neutrals to begin with, like natural textures and white dishes, only adding in sprinkles of color. When it's time to change, it makes it fairly easy to delete one bit of color in exchange for another.

I hope you feel inspired to make simple changes in your home to celebrate the changing season with this example. Please let me know if you liked this different approach, and if you do, I'll try to do more decorating this way for you!
